A TEXAS SMASHING SUCCESS! Amy Wang Strikes Gold at Pan Am Championships
September 14, 2023. It was a hot, sultry night in Havana, Cuba….Amy Wang’s wild Pan Am Championships fairy tale ride had just come to an end in utterly brilliant fashion. Having earlier defeated #1 seed Adriana Diaz (world #13) in the semis in 7 games, like a total boss she had just bestowed the kiss of death on her finals opponent, the #2 seed Bruna Takahashi (world #38) deuce in the 7th. As the gathered fans and her US teammates cheered wildly, the always stoic Wang behaved in typical fashion. You couldn’t tell if she had just won the biggest championship title of her life or the A vs D round robin match at her club’s local league night. Her celebration? Waiting politely for the understandably upset Takahashi to gather herself, a quick handshake, and that was it. No fist pump, no yell, nada. WTF?!?
Amy, you are an absolutely incredible table tennis athlete except for this one huge glaring weak spot in your game that must be addressed sooner or later. We at Majorponghead are gonna get you a celebration consultant! And your first lesson will be to study the classics, like this one.
Congratulations also to Bay Area Blasters’ Lily Zhang, who won a bronze medal in Women’s Singles. Next up, Amy, Lily and Portland Paddlers’ Rachel Sung join forces in the team competition. Bring home some more hardware, ladies!
Ok that does it for this article, it was short and sweet but like everyone else today, we are headed to the airport for our flight to Daytona Beach, FL for the first MLTT event of the season, where the four Eastern Division teams will clash for the first time. See you there!
